The early mp3 encoders were a hoot.A 33MHz 386 and, eventually, a 66 MHz 486 would be brought to their knees. The former couldn't really create a 128kbit sample without the operator aging visibly. (It certainly couldn't play one without stuttering. The latter could barely do it)

The Pentium came out around that time and was a joke compared to what we were told we could expect from it. Little toaster ovens that couldn't be trusted to "math" properly.
